Orientation Training of Paramedical's in HIV/AIDS
The orientation training of paramedical's at the RIHFW Dhobiwan started in Nov 2000 and till now 2509 paramedics have been oriented in various aspects of HIV/AIDS, blood transfusion and syndromic approach to the STI/RTI (Table). The details of the training curriculum have been given in the table. Various paramedics oriented included:
- Community health officers, health educators, extension educators, health supervisors
- Male and female health workers
- General nurses, public health nurses, and auxiliary nurses
- Medical assistants, pharmacists, theatre assistants,
- Laboratory technicians , and dental technicians,
- Nursing orderlies
Pre-and post-evaluation of the trainees has revealed that, overall, the awareness level showed an increase of 270%. The impact was especially greater for the less-educated workers who greatly benefited from our programmes in vernacular (Kashmiri / Urdu) and the audio-visuals particularly films in Urdu/ Hindi.
The main training objective of the programme were:
To create awareness and clear the doubts about the disease
To empower them to devise and implement IEC programmes in the periphery
To sensitize them to risks of transmission by blood from patient to patient
To empower them to minimize the risks of occupational exposure and
To prepare them for conducting the annual Family Health Awareness Campaign among the general population and providing service-delivery in terms of medical advice / drugs for STI/RTI's.

- Link between HIV/AIDS and STD; RTI/STI in women and syndromic approach in diagnosis and management of STI/ RTI

IEC strategies with special reference to HIV/ AIDS
- Counseling - Basics of Counselling and Role Play;
- Pre - and post – counselling in HIV and AIDS
